The University of Kentucky manages the Advanced Science & Technology Commercialization Center, better known as ASTeCC. Opened in 1994, ASTeCC is UK's premier business incubator and also provides a central location for the programs and services offered by the Office for Commercialization & Economic Development, including leasing space in ASTeCC, intellectual property protection, commercialization and licensing, university-industry partnerships, and the Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship. Located within the engineering complex, the 80,000 sq. ft., $17 million building project was funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration and the Small Business Administration. Sixty-two companies have graduated from ASTeCC since 1994. Startup companies and UK researchers share ASTeCC core facilities including the Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CeNSE), the electron microscopy center, and the mass spectrometry facility. AgTeCC, located at the Kentucky Tobacco Research and Development Center (KTRDC), is an optimal laboratory environment for startup and emerging companies conducting research on crop-based agriculture and provides access to plant-growth and tissue-culture resources and services at KTRDC.
