BioGenerator is a privately funded, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization created to facilitate the formation of science companies in the St. Louis region. Founded in 2003, BioGenerator has been funded through the generosity of the McDonnell Family Foundation, the Danforth Foundation, Bunge North America, the Monsanto Fund and CORTEX. BioGenerator's mission is to support economic development and job growth in the St. Louis region. To accomplish this, BioGenerator identifies promising technologies and services, and works with the researcher or entrepreneur to build a successful and sustainable company. BioGenerator provides assistance, possibly with pre-seed or seed funding, at the early stages of new company formation, with continued support to milestones of follow-on funding or sustainable revenue. BioGenerator invests up to $50,000 for pre-seed companies and up to $250,000 for seed stage companies. The BioGenerator Seed Fund was launched in 2003 to provide an early stage investment mechanism for regional plant and life science companies. BioGenerator Seed companies have received up to $250K in BioGenerator cash investment. BioGenerator's Spark Fund and i6 Project are pre-seed funding programs for earlier stage companies. Spark Fund investments are capped at $50K. Regardless of the fund, most BioGenerator investments are syndicated with additional investors. BioGenerator occasionally makes very small scale investments in early stage companies or even technologies at the pre-company stage. $31 million has been invested in startups.
