Formed in 2001, the Collaborative Technology Program (CollabTech), working together with the Technology Development Center of the College of Arts & Sciences' Center for Biotechnology & Drug Design, represents Georgia State University's commitment to economic development in the Atlanta region through the incubation of, and collaboration with, early-stage biotechnology companies. The CollabTech Research Facility, completed in July 2008, is located in heart of downtown Atlanta at the Suntrust bank complex. The building is on Edgewood Avenue, standing four (4) stories tall with about 13,000 square feet per floor. It is located across the street from Georgia State University's existing research and teaching facilities and associated faculty/staff. Also across the street from the CollabTech facility are the Georgia Research Alliance offices, as well as the Georgia Cancer Coalition offices. Georgia State has significantly increased its research award funding over the past several years. Total annual research awards of $122.7 million were received in fiscal year 2018, the fourth year in a row the university has earned more than $100 million in external investment.
