Founded 1999, In-Q-Tel is a private, non-profit enterprise funded by the CIA in order to identify and invest in technologies useful for national security. In-Q-Tel engages with startups, mezzanine and established companies, as well as universities and research labs at a strategic level. The firm engages in equity investments, product development funding, innovative intellectual property arrangements, and commercial and government business development guidance. In-Q-Tel generally invests between $500K to $3M. To date, the firm has invested in more than 150 companies. In-Q-Tel currently concentrates its engagements in two broad technology practice areas of interest: Information and Communication Technologies; and Physical and Biological Technologies. IQT assess approximately 1,000 companies annually to find the optimal technologies that align with partners needs and priorities. Every $1 invested by IQT leverages $28 in private sector investment.
