Matter is a five month start-up accelerator and early stage venture capital firm that supports and invests in media entrepreneurs. Target ventures are existing start up teams of 2 to 4 founders that have built an early stage prototype. After a competitive selection process, six teams are chosen to receive $50K in funding. After beginning with a week-long design thinking bootcamp, each month-long sprint ends in a Design Review, where the entrepreneurs pitch ideas and get feedback as they build momentum towards Demo Day. The entire class comes together for key milestones during the program: Bootcamp and Design Review Zero in San Francisco, Design Review Two in New York, and Demo Days in both locations. Throughout the rest of the 5 months, Matter creates a supportive environment in both San Francisco and New York with workshops, weekly speakers, and office hours. Matter is financed by an initial $2.5M investment from its founding limited partners, Knight Foundation and KQED, and supported by PRX. Since starting Matter from scratch in 2012, Matter has raised 2 venture funds, run 8 accelerator cohorts, invested in 73 portfolio companies, brought together 12 institutional media and technology partners, delivered 5 partner accelerator programs, trained local news organizations across the United States and Asia Pacific through Open Matter, and assembled a network of 340 mentors.
