Founded in 2005, and formerly known as MCNC Ventures, NC IDEA assists entrepreneurial companies with seed and early stage funding through traditional venture capital, as well as pre-venture stage funding via its grants program. NC IDEA focuses on helping companies in the following areas: information technology, medical diagnostics and devices, material sciences, and green technologies. For earlier-stage investments, NC IDEA will seek a position on the company's board of directors. For later-stage investments, the firm will seek a board seat or observer rights to board meetings. NC IDEA will focus its investment resources primarily on companies headquartered or operating within the state of North Carolina. NC IDEA awards selected projects an amount of up to $10,000. Since 2018, NC IDEA MICRO has awarded nearly $450,000 in grant funding to 45 companies throughout the state.
