SDL Capital is an investment firm founded in February 2003 by Dr. Donald R. Scifres, formerly the founder, CEO and Chairman of SDL, Inc. Dr. Scifres partnered with Michael L. Foster, the former CFO at SDL, Inc., to create SDL Ventures and invest in technology start-ups. The strategy for SDL Ventures is to focus on early stage investments offering clear technical differentiation and strong founder teams. A majority of SDL Ventures' investments have involved optical technology and/or communications or medical solutions. Additional investments have been made in green tech and Internet-related companies. SDL Ventures' initial investment is typically in the $500 thousand to $2 million range, reserving approximately three times that amount for future rounds. Since its inception, SDL Ventures has been involved in over one hundred financings in some thirty companies. SDL Ventures has been the lead investor for over half of these companies. Through 2019, nine of these companies have been acquired or gone public and five have closed. The remaining companies continue to grow and develop.
