Since its inception in 2016, Sony Innovation Fund makes seed stage or early stage, minority investments in technology startup companies. The venture capital arm aims to provide a window into emerging technology and business opportunities and help establish strategic partnerships with innovative startups. Each investment has a 'sponsor' within Sony, chosen for its strategic interest/value to the emerging company. Core technologies of interest include: Audio & Video distribution; Advanced data compression technologies; Digital Rights Management (e.g. digital watermarking technology); Image-recognition, Search, Content Management; Reconfigurable processors, Media processor, Image processors; Display technologies; Wireless technologies; and Video gaming. In addition to minority investments, Sony Innovation Fund may also have licensing agreements and/or joint projects with technology companies. Sony Innovation Fund typically makes investments from $500K to $3M. The firm has participated in over 400 standardization and alliance groups.
