Founded in 1974, Sofinnova Ventures invests venture capital in early-stage Life Science and Information Technology startup companies. The majority of the firm's investing is in the U.S., and about a tenth of its investments are made in Europe. Within the U.S., Soffinova's IT investing is heavily focused on the San Francisco Bay Area, while its Life Science investing covers San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and several cities on the East Coast. The firm focuses on promising seed-stage and first institutional round investments, but occasionally invests in intermediate- and later-stage startup companies. Soffinova's investments in technology companies range from $5 to $15 million, with an initial investment of $3 to $5 million; and most life science investments range from $15 to $30 million overall, with an initial investment of $5 to $15 million. In 2011, the firm raised $440M for Sofinnova Venture Partners VIII. In July of 2014 the firm announced the closing of Sofinnova Venture Partners IX, L.P. at the hard cap of $500 million, and in excess of the initial fund target of $425 million. The firm has approximately $2.3B in assets under management and committed capital.
