The State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB), created in 1951, is responsible for managing the assets of the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), the State Investment Fund (SIF) and other state trust funds. As of December 31, 2020, SWIB managed about $144 billion in assets. SWIB is required to make investment management decisions for the pension funds solely for the benefit of the members of the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). Investments in Wisconsin, which follow strict guidelines, are part of SWIB's everyday investment activity in the global markets. SWIB also makes a special effort to identify investment opportunities that exist within the state. There are two portfolios dedicated primarily to Wisconsin investments.
