The firm was established in 1978 by Robert Wood 'Woody' Johnson IV, a former United States ambassador to the United Kingdom. He is a great-grandson of Robert Wood Johnson I (co-founder of Johnson & Johnson). Alongside his brother, Christopher, he is the owner of the New York Jets of the National Football League.
