True North is an early stage venture capital company founded by Mike Ahearn, who guided First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) from start up to an S&P 500 company. True North Venture Partners invests in and supports early stage businesses that have the potential to transform, expand and lead global industries. The firm is focused on industries such as energy, water, agriculture and waste, where the need for disruptive innovation is great and the challenges faced by entrepreneurs are daunting. While True North prefers to be the first investor in a portfolio company, it also will consider later stage investments in certain circumstances. Total investment in a given company will generally range from $100,000-$25 million, with the capability to invest beyond that amount when appropriate. True North makes long-term commitments to businesses through a perpetual holding company, which is capitalized in excess of $700 million.
