The USF Tampa Bay Technology Incubator offers assistance to Florida-based, start-up companies pioneering new technologies, within the University or the community, through the early stages of development and growth to graduation. These companies must meet the selection criteria and be approved by the advisory board. The 60,000 sq. ft. incubator facility is located near USF's Tampa Campus in Telecom Park. It has twenty 130 sq. ft. offices that house high-tech start-up companies conducting scientific research. Five 1,300 sq. ft. labs, each with one 130 sq. ft office, are used by companies conducting laboratory research with access to the many diverse resources of a major research university including consultation and coaching by business and technology professionals. In the 2011-2012 fiscal year, USF broke the $400 million mark for research awards, earning more than $411 million in total awards and contracts. In the 2016-2017 fiscal year, USF earned $475.2 million in awards and contracts, and ranked 11th worldwide among universities granted U.S. patents. $180.2 million in total external funding has been received by current companies to date.
