In 1969, Venrock was founded to continue Laurance Rockefeller's heritage of investment and building entrepreneur-backed companies, beginning with Intel. The firm has invested more than $2.5 billion in more than 440 companies, resulting in 125 IPO's over the past 40 years. Venrock investments span information technology, healthcare, media and energy sectors. The majority of Venrock investments are seed or first round, and range from investments of a couple hundred thousand to $10 million or more. Second round investments are considered where there is demonstrated progress toward market leadership. The firm currently has $3.0 billion under management, and offices in Palo Alto, New York City, and Cambridge. July of 2014, Venrock closed its seventh fund, bringing in $450 million in new capital. The firm will likely make about 8-10 new investments per year from this fund. Venrock raised $450 million for its eighth fund February of 2017.
