The William C. Norris Institute is continuing the legacy of the founder of Control Data Corporation by supporting the start-up and growth of visionary companies in Minnesota. Control Data Corporation (now Ceridian) established the William C. Norris Institute in 1988 to enable its founder and retired chairman and CEO to continue his endeavors in support of innovation in education and creation of new companies with socially beneficial products and services. The Norris Fund for Technology Innovation, the Institute's seed capital fund invests in innovative technology-based companies that are in the early stages of commercializing proprietary products and services. Since joining the University of St. Thomas in 2001, the Norris Institute has: Invested in 47 new ventures, 23 of them founded by UST alumni; Invested a total of $4 million in seed capital, leading to over $58 million in additional capital for portfolio companies; Re-invested more than $875,000 from returns on investment; and Seven current portfolio companies have an estimated ROI over 300 percent. The Institute fund is a revolving investment program that provides equity investments and convertible note loans of up to $75,000, with deferred payback terms and warrants. In 2008, the Norris Institute established the James Rogers Fox M.D. Fund for Healthcare Innovation, which expands the Norris Institute's ability to provide seed capital for emerging healthcare technology companies. The fund was started with a $1 million bequest from Dr. Fox.
