The NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering has several incubators to facilitate entrepreneurial growth within New York city. Its first opened in 2004 and is located in downtown Brooklyn. In 2009, its second launched on Varick Street in Manhattan as part of Mayor Bloomberg's Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan. The Varick Street incubator is has a particular interest in digital media, cleantech, information technology, social media, and mobile application sectors. The New York City Accelerator for a Clean and Renewable Economy (NYC ACRE), also commenced in 2009 and is focused on supporting the efforts of clean-technology-oriented companies. NYC ACRE is seeded by a four year, $1.5M grant from the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA) to the School of Engineering aimed at growing an ecosystem of entrepreneurs, international companies, and innovative local businesses that are providing solutions to climate and energy issues while growing the cleantech/renewable energy sector and creating jobs in NYC. In 2012, opened a second incubator in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood, in partnership with NYCEDC and Two Trees Management. DUMBO focuses on creative industries, digital media, mobile, and web 2.0. Each incubator provides start-up companies physical or virtual working space, along with access to markets and customers through several valuable NYC-based organizations including the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the New York City Investment Fund. There are currently 59 companies amongst the incubators, with $87.5 million raised in capital. Within the past four years, the School of Engineering's incubators have generated more than $352 million in economic activity and 900 jobs.
