Private Advisors was founded in 1997 by Lou Moelchert to provide institutional and high net worth investors with professional management of alternative investments. As the CIO of the University of Richmond endowment, Mr. Moelchert began making investments into alternatives in the early 1980s. As of March 31, 2016, Private Advisors managed over $5.6 billion in assets with over 70 employees. The firm provides investors with expertise in fundamental credit, equity and diversified hedge fund strategies. The firm also provides expertise in private equity investing including North American small company primary fund investments and co-investments, secondary investments and real assets. Private Advisors launched its dedicated small company fund of funds investment capability in 2001, which focuses solely on lower middle market fund managers located in North America. The firm targets funds focused on growth equity, buyout, and distressed/turnaround strategies, with fund sizes typically below $750 million and an emphasis on fund sizes below $500 million. These fund managers typically target investments in portfolio companies below $150 million in enterprise value. Private Advisors launched its dedicated secondary investment capability in 2012 with the addition of Cuyahoga Capital Partners. The secondary investment capability pursues small, often negotiated secondary investments, with a focus on investments below $25 million and an emphasis on investments between $5 and $15 million. Private Advisors' secondary investment capability targets a wide variety of private equity strategies including buyout, growth equity, venture capital, mezzanine, diversified energy, and fund of funds. Private Advisors launched its dedicated co-investment program in 2006 to provide investors with access to co-investment opportunities.
