The Social Innovation Initiative (SII), a program of the Swearer Center for Public Service, promotes an open culture of collaborative learning and community impact at Brown. Brown University offers two options for students starting or building social ventures: the Social Innovation Fellowship and the Brown Venture Launch Fund (BVLF). The Social Innovation Fellowship, allows 15-20 students to grow a social venture over the summer, supported by a year of intensive skills training, corresponding coursework, and a community of social entrepreneurs. There are three major components of the fellowship: education through through workshops and one-on-one coaching; network building; and funding. The BVLF is a collaborative project of the Social Innovation Initiative, the Brown Entrepreneurship Program (EP), and the Office of the Dean of the College. The fund provides seed money for new, promising ventures at the earliest stages. BVLF supplies $250 Explore grants, $2,500 Expand grants, and up to $25,000 in Brown Venture Prizes to all kinds of ventures led by Brown students.
