Founded in 1985, Sorrento Ventures is a San Diego-based venture capital firm committed to providing strategic capital and vision to promising emerging growth companies based in Southern California. Sorrento invests in companies led by experienced management teams that have demonstrated that a large market opportunity exists for their products and services. Sorrento's investment focus includes medical devices and biotechnology, enterprise software, communications, electronics and hardware, enabling distribution technologies (including the Internet), and specialty retail. Sorrento seeks to invest between $1 million and $2 million (in three to five new companies each year) in a first investment round, and between $5 million and $10 million over the life of the company. The firm primarily invests in companies that can grow to $50 million in revenues within five years. It typically invests in the Series A or Series B, in which it prefers to be the lead investor and for capital-intensive businesses, it participates in an investment syndicate led by another venture firm. Sorrento prefers to take board seat in its early stage portfolio companies and retains only observation rights in later stage companies. Sorrento has raised six separate venture funds and currently has over $115,000,000 of committed capital under management, having invested in over 40 companies during the last fifteen years.
